I begin this week with a new series titled, "Digging Wells of Revival" and the first message of the series is, "Your Inheritance". As I am preparing for this message it has fascinated me how often "wells" were mentioned in the First Testament and how few they are mentioned in the Second. It is then that you realize that in the First Testament "wells" were symbols of refreshing, blessing, and inheritance. Often disputes over "wells" were settled by the sword and at times even oaths were established there.
In the Second Testament, Jesus is "The Well" - He is our source of refreshing, blessing and inheritance. This is exemplified powerfully in the story of the Women at the Well - who had an encounter Jesus, that would change her life and the town of the Samaria. The story picks up with Jesus stopping on his travels for a drink of water and asking a Samaritan women for a drink. After her curt reply Jesus says...
John 4:10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
13 Jesus said to her,“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
"If you knew..." If we only knew our inheritance; if we only knew Jesus, we would never thirst again. There are so many "well" to draw from these days, and they will each leave us thirsty again. "The Well" however, promises that by coming to Him, that our own well will spring forth and we will never be thirsty again. Eternal life promises a reconciled relationship with God the Father and makes us co-heirs with Jesus.
James 2:5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?
I believe this series will be a great discovery and revelation for all of those with ears to hear. We will discover what our inheritance is and what it means, we will understand all the different facets of how "wells" operated: how it symbolized a gathering place; and breakthrough in worship, etc.
Stay tuned!
